Our mission

At the National Suicide Prevention Network, our mission is to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and connect individuals to crisis and ongoing care resources. We are dedicated to fostering a community of support and understanding.

About us

The National Suicide Prevention Network is a nonprofit organization, 501(c)3, headquartered in Tennessee, dedicated to preventing suicide through education, training, research, connection to life-changing and life-saving resources, and ongoing  support. We believe that every life is valuable and that suicide is preventable with the appropriate intervention, treatment, and support. 

Issue of suicide.

Across the United States, the most recent data finds over 49,000 Americans die by suicide each year. 

Suicide affects all populations.

Method.

Firearms are the most common method used in suicides. Firearms were used in more than 50% of suicides in 2023.

 

Age.

People ages 85 and older had the highest rates of suicide in 2023.

Sex.

The suicide rate among males in 2023 was approximately four times higher than the rate among females. Males make up 50% of the population but nearly 80% of suicides.

Race/ethnicity.

The racial/ethnic groups with the highest rates in 2023 were non-Hispanic American Indian and Alaska Native people and non-Hispanic White people.
